Things to Do in Pokhara on a Rainy Day

Pokhara generally enjoys a subtropical climate that is milder than many other regions of Nepal. The city experiences three main seasons—summer, monsoon, and winter— each bringing changes in temperature and rainfall.

Pokhara receives some of the heaviest rainfall in Nepal, largely because of the surrounding hills and high Himalayan ranges. The Annapurna range forces moisture-laden monsoon clouds to rise, cool, and release heavy rainfall over the valley. The lakes of Pokhara, including the famous Phewa Lake, also contribute to the region's humid climate through evaporation.

If you are visiting Pokhara during the monsoon season from June to August, carrying a raincoat or umbrella is recommended. However, a rainy day does not mean your travel plans have to stop. From relaxing in cafés to exploring museums and enjoying local cuisine, there are plenty of things to do in Pokhara during the monsoon.

1. Read a Book in a Lakeside Café

Spend a peaceful rainy day reading a book while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee near Phewa Lake. Lakeside Pokhara has numerous cafés and bookshops, making it an ideal place for book lovers to relax and enjoy the soothing sound of rain.

2. Enjoy a Spa and Massage

Treat yourself to a relaxing spa and massage in Pokhara. This is especially enjoyable after completing a trek in the Annapurna region. Professional therapists offer a variety of treatments designed to help you relax and rejuvenate your body and mind.

3. Enjoy Local Fish and Drinks at Pame

Take a short drive from Lakeside to Pame, a popular destination known for its local fish restaurants and beautiful views of Phewa Lake. Located approximately 15–20 minutes from Lakeside, Pame is a great place to enjoy fresh local cuisine and a relaxed atmosphere when the rain pauses.

4. Join a Yoga Class or Retreat

Pokhara is an excellent destination for yoga and wellness retreats. Join a group class or private session and enjoy a peaceful practice surrounded by nature. Whether you are new to yoga or looking to deepen your practice, Pokhara offers a tranquil environment for relaxation and spiritual well-being.

5. Visit the International Mountain Museum

Learn about Nepal's mountains, mountaineering history, and Himalayan communities at the International Mountain Museum in Pokhara. The museum showcases the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest, as well as the history of mountaineering, Himalayan cultures, geology, flora, and fauna.

The museum also features original mountaineering equipment and exhibits related to some of the earliest Himalayan expeditions. Located a short drive from Lakeside, it is an excellent indoor attraction for a rainy day in Pokhara.

6. Learn to Cook Traditional Nepali Food

Learn how to prepare popular Nepali dishes such as dal bhat and momo by joining a traditional Nepali cooking class. A cooking class is a fun way to experience local culture and take home new culinary skills from your trip to Nepal.

7. Enjoy Monsoon Discounts and Restaurant Offers

The monsoon season is generally considered the off-season for tourism in Nepal, which means many hotels, restaurants, and businesses offer special monsoon discounts and seasonal promotions. Take advantage of special offers, restaurant deals, and happy-hour promotions during your stay in Pokhara.

8. Watch a Movie at a Cinema

If you are looking for a simple indoor activity, spend a rainy afternoon watching a movie. Pokhara has several cinemas and multiplexes offering a comfortable entertainment experience with the latest movies, popcorn, and refreshments.

Can You Explore Pokhara During the Monsoon?

Yes. Rain in Pokhara does not necessarily last all day. During the monsoon season, rainfall often occurs in heavy spells, leaving periods of clearer weather in between. When the rain stops, you can enjoy a short walk, cycle around Lakeside Pokhara, go shopping, or explore nearby attractions.

If weather conditions are safe, you may also enjoy a short ride on a covered paddle boat on Phewa Lake. Always check the weather and follow local safety advice before going boating during the monsoon.
